“Build a Bench Project“ Becomes Reality
Back in October Mr. Lutz and Ms. Hollihan applied for a Skills Canada-Ontario/Lowes Grant to purchase a portable saw mill to support the Green Industries and Construction students in building their skills and improving the landscape around their school and community.
The idea behind the “build a bench project” is to partner with groups in the community that cut down trees and use the saw mill to cut those trees into lumber that can be used to build benches, picnic tables, bird houses and other thing to improve the landscape around Glenview and in our community. Our idea was well received and we were approved for an $8500 grant, which was used to purchase a Norwood Industries Lumbermate 2000 portable sawmill. The sawmill was assembled by Mr Lutz’s Green Industries students together with Mr Fitton and Mr. McLeod’s Construction students. Mr. Herring’s senior Small Engines students took care of the engine installation.
A group of students have already used the sawmill as part of a forestry display at the Career showcase at Bingemans on Dec 2 where 2000 grade 8 and high school students had a chance to explore careers in the skilled trades. This lead to both TnT Property Maintenance, All Green Tree Services and Grand River Conservation Authority becoming project partners by offering to donate trees that they have to remove in the community.
If you or your company wish to become involve in this great project please contact Mr Lutz at (519) 621-9510 or eckhard_lutz@wrdsb.on.ca
Many thanks to Skills Canada- Ontario and Lowes for their generous support.
